PENANG, 18 SEPTEMBER 2010 – Muhammad Zaris Hakimi Bin Hasman, a 15-year-old boy from Penang took the top spot at the Red Bull Skim Tour today. Held at Batu Feringghi, the first skimboarding competition circuit in Malaysia garnered over 70 skimboarders from all around Malaysia.
Zaris or fondly known as “The Legend” by his friends joined the sport in 2008 and have been actively involved in skimboarding events.
“My friends asked me to join the sport, and I fell in love with it. I practice regularly and am very pleased to have won this competition today”, said Zaris.
“I would like to thank Red Bull Malaysia and the organisers for organising this competition. I would like to see more of my friends to join a healthy sport like this” added him.
The competition is organised by Penang Skimboarding Association in collaboration with Penang State Government and Penang Sports Council.
This event, which was listed in this year's Calendar of Events 2010 under “Penang Participative Sports/ Be Amazed” booklet for tourists have also attracted fans from Singapore, Maldives and United Kingdom to participate in the International category.
Participants show off their wave riding skills and technical maneuvers (tricks) in their quest of grabbing the title of “Best National Skimboarder” and “Best International Skimboarder”. The winners took home an exclusive Victoria Skimboards items. The main prize, which is a carbon board was signed by one the world's greatest surfers of Bill Bryan and Morgan Just.

Red Bull Malaysia is thrilled to promote Skimboarding in Malaysia, a sport which started over 60 years ago on round wood boards that has evolved into a highly competitive water sport. The modern skimboarding has evolved into a “real” sport where the limits are being tested by some of the best board riders on the planet.

Red Bull Skim Tour 2010 is Malaysia's first skimboarding circuit competition and Penang is the second leg of the tour.
This event (Penang Leg) is organised by Penang Skimboarding Association (PSA)/ Persatuan Skimboarding Pulau Pinang (PSPP) and working in collaboration with the Penang State Government and Penang Sports Council.
The competition is organised to promote a healthy and active skimboarding community in Malaysia and throughout Asia as well as to further promote Penang and Batu Feringghi as a tourist destination through the sport of skimboarding.
Red Bull Malaysia is the main sponsor for this event.

ABOUT SKIMBOARDING
Skimboarding (or skimming) is a boardsport in which a skimboard (a smaller counterpart to a surfboard) is used to glide across the water's surface. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach, with skimboarders running and dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. They may use their momentum to 'skim' out to breaking waves, which they then catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. Another aspect of skimboarding is 'flatland' which involves performing tricks derived from skateboarding.
